Old blood more likely to get infected

As compared to fresh blood, old blood donated kept in hospitals is four times more likely to be infected when compared to fresh blood. The blood is not infected in itself but the stored blood releases chemicals called cytokines that can affect the immune systems of the patients.
The reports on stored bloods kept in hospitals were given by Dr. Raquel Nahra of Sparks Regional Medical Center in Fort Smith in Ark.
