A majority of Britons support The Prince of Wales’ marriage to Camilla Parker Bowles, according to surveys out today. The results run counter to three snap polls conducted in immediately after the announcement of the wedding, all showing a majority disapproving.
And a separate survey for the Daily Mail also provided good news for the newly-engaged pair, finding 58% approved of the wedding, with 27% against. It’s a love story that spans three decades and two marriages, and now Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles are to wed. After years of speculation, Camilla is to become HRH the Duchess of Cornwall. Their relationship may boast a happy ending – but it’s been a rocky road to romance.
The romance blossomed between Camilla and Prince Charles in 1972, a year after meeting on the polo field at Windsor. However, there was no offer of marriage and Camilla married cavalry officer Andrew Parker Bowles.
Despite being married, Camilla remained Charles’ most trusted friend and helped the Prince to choose a suitable wife – Lady Diana Spencer and the fairy tale wedding between Diana and Charles took place on July 21, 1981. In 1986, it became known that Charles was seeing old flame Camilla. “Yes, there were three us in this marriage,” Diana had once said.
The continuing relationship between the Prince of Wales and Parker Bowles was kept secret the early 1990s, until the eruption the tape recordings of a private phone conversation between them. The affair publicly resumed after he made the decision to separate from his wife, and in 1994 Charles admitted adultery national television.
